Final Filing Date: October 1, 2021

CAL-JAC ACADEMY OFFERS PATH TO THE FIRE SERVICE FOR ELIGIBLE CANDIDATES

The California Firefighter Joint Apprenticeship Committee (Cal-JAC) is excited to announce our 3rd Cal-JAC Pre-Apprenticeship EMT Academy! This coming year’s academy will provide a pathway to a career in the fire service for qualified candidates in the Los Angeles, California area.

Cal-JAC is accepting applications at caljacacademy.org now until October 1, 2021, for a spot in the Cal-JAC EMT Academy – a tuition-free program that offers a rigorous and comprehensive pathway for those serious about beginning a career as a first responder.

The 6-month long program, which is set to begin instruction at Slawson Occupational Center in January 2022, is designed to provide eligible candidates an opportunity to earn their Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) certification as the first step toward a career in the fire service. In addition to obtaining the skills required of a nationally registered EMT, academy cadets will train physically for the Candidate Physical Ability Test (CPAT), receive preparatory instruction for the Firefighter Entry-Level Written Exam, and complete both tests as part of the course. Guidance from a firefighter mentor will also assist candidates in accessing academic support and honing their interview skills.

All graduating cadets will be added to the Firefighter Candidate Testing Center (FCTC) Statewide Eligibility List, which is used by fire departments throughout California that are looking to hire.

Sponsored by the Cal-JAC and the Richard M. Slawson Occupational Center, the Cal-JAC Academy is open to candidates who meet the following prerequisites:

      • Demonstrate financial need (income under $66,250 for an individual, with tiered minimums for additional dependents)
      • 18 years of age on or before January 11, 2022
      • Background Check
      • Drug Screening
      • Doctor’s clearance for physical activity
      • Up-to-date vaccinations
